My Sheffield roof is not south-facing. Is solar still worth it?
Usually, yes. Sheffield streets curve around hillsides, so plenty of good roofs face east or west, which typically produce around 80 to 85% of what a south-facing roof would. An east-west pair can even suit a household better, spreading generation across morning and evening. In UK conditions a system produces roughly 850 to 950 kWh per kWp a year, so a 4kW array on a south-facing roof gives around 3,400 to 3,800 kWh, and east or west is not far behind.
How do you deal with shading from hills and neighbouring houses?
We measure it rather than guess. At the survey we record the horizon from your roof, including the slope behind the house and any mature trees, then model how the shadow moves through the day and the year. Panel-level optimisers or microinverters stop one shaded panel dragging the whole string down. Where the shading is too heavy to make the numbers work, we will tell you so.
How much do solar panels cost for a Sheffield terrace or semi?

Can you fit solar panels on slate or stone roofs?
Yes, and Sheffield has plenty of them. Slate and stone slate roofs need a different approach from concrete tiles: we use hook-and-flashing fixings designed for slate, lift and re-lay individual slates around each bracket rather than cutting them, and check the battens and rafters can take the load. If the survey shows a slate roof is near the end of its life, we will say so.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Sheffield?
