Interwar Semis, Terraces and Detached Homes
The Birmingham interwar semi is usually hipped rather than gabled, with main slopes facing east and west. A two-aspect array, with panels split across both slopes, spreads generation across the whole day instead of peaking hard at noon. For a working household that often lines up better with when the electricity actually gets used. We use a south-facing hip where one exists, but an east-west semi remains an excellent candidate.
Victorian terraces have narrower roofs, rear slopes are often the better option, and shared party walls mean scaffold access and cable routes take more planning. Larger detached homes in areas like Sutton Coldfield have the roof area for bigger arrays and often add solar battery storage, which is where bill savings head towards the top of the 50 to 70% range. My Birmingham roof faces east and west rather than south. Will solar still work?
Yes. So many of Birmingham's semis sit on east-west streets that this is the question we hear most.
