Solar Panels in Bristol

Much of Bristol's housing is Victorian and Edwardian: terraces and villas in Clifton, Redland, Bishopston and Southville, many inside conservation areas and some listed. So consent and appearance come up early. Add the hills, where roofs on one street can face different ways and shade each other, and the design has to start on the roof, not from a satellite image.

Integral Solar is a family-run, MCS-certified and NICEIC-approved installer with 25+ years' experience and over 1,000 customers across the UK. Every Bristol job is carried out by our own directly employed engineers, never subcontractors, and most domestic installations are finished in one to two days. Household bills typically fall by 50 to 70%, and every solar panel installation, from solar panels for homes to commercial roofs, begins with a free, no-obligation survey.

What a Bristol System Costs

Typical figures before your itemised quote.

£6,000 to £9,000 for a Typical Home System

That covers most Bristol homes before battery storage, and residential installations currently carry 0% VAT. In UK conditions each kWp generates roughly 850 to 950 kWh a year, so a 4kW array produces around 3,400 to 3,800 kWh annually. MCS certification also qualifies the system for Smart Export Guarantee payments.

Panel choice shifts those figures, especially on a narrow terrace roof. Our guide to choosing the right panel covers efficiency, appearance and cost.

Period Roofs, Planning and Shading in Bristol

Terraces, Villas and Conservation Areas

Roof-mounted solar is usually permitted development, but a listed building always needs consent and some conservation areas restrict panels on slopes facing the road. In Clifton, Redland and the older parts of Bishopston and Southville we check the property's status before we quote, and use a rear or side slope where that avoids the issue. All-black panels mounted low to the slates or tiles keep the array unobtrusive, and solar battery storage lets a smaller, less visible array still cover the evening.

Bristol is hilly in places, and orientation and shading change street by street, so we measure both. On the new-build estates around Filton and Bradley Stoke the roofs are simpler and usually take a full array, and our new builds and renovations team can plan the panels in before the roof covering goes on.

What We Check at the Survey

  • Conservation area or listed status, and which roof slopes face a highway
  • Roof orientation and pitch, measured on the roof rather than from a map
  • Shading from the street's slope, chimneys, neighbouring roofs and trees
  • Condition of slates or tiles, battens and rafters before specifying fixings
  • Panel finish and mounting height so the array sits neatly on a period roof
  • Loft, cellar or garage space for the inverter and a battery

Commercial Solar in Bristol

Bristol's commercial roofs range from offices and retail units to the aerospace and engineering cluster in the north of the city, where manufacturing sites run heavy daytime loads. The warehouses near the motorways have the large, unshaded roofs that suit solar best.

Our commercial solar panels team handles the structural check, grid application and installation, with commercial battery storage where it pays. Bristol City Council has set a target of net zero by 2030, and we can provide generation estimates for your own reporting.

Bristol Solar Questions, Answered

What Bristol homeowners and businesses ask us most often.

How much do solar panels cost for a Bristol terrace or semi?

A typical domestic system costs between £6,000 and £9,000 before battery storage, and residential installations currently carry 0% VAT. A narrow Victorian terrace in Southville or Bedminster usually takes a smaller array than a semi in Horfield or Fishponds, and slate roofs or tight access can add a little to the labour, so the accurate number is the one on your itemised quote.

Do I need planning permission in a Bristol conservation area or on a listed building?

Roof-mounted domestic solar is usually permitted development, so most Bristol homes need no application. In a conservation area, panels on a slope that faces a highway can fall outside those rights, and a listed building always needs listed building consent before any work starts. We check the property's status before we quote and can prepare the drawings for any application that is needed.

My roof is not south-facing. Is solar still worth it in Bristol?

In most cases, yes. Bristol's hills mean plenty of good roofs face east or west, and those typically produce somewhat less than a south-facing roof but usually still enough to make the numbers work. An east-west pair can suit a household well, spreading generation across morning and evening. We measure orientation, pitch and shading at the survey and give you a realistic annual figure.

Can panels be made less visible on a period home?

Yes. All-black panels with black frames and backing sheets sit far more quietly on a slate or clay-tiled roof than silver-framed modules, and a low-profile mounting system keeps the array close to the roof surface. Where the front slope is sensitive, we look at rear or side slopes first, and we show you the options at the survey.

Which areas of Bristol do you cover?

All of them, plus the surrounding towns. Our in-house teams cover Clifton, Redland, Bishopston, Horfield, Southville, Bedminster, Fishponds, Filton, Bradley Stoke and Kingswood, along with Keynsham and Portishead just outside the city. We operate across the whole of the United Kingdom, so if your postcode is not listed, call 0333 241 4320 and we will confirm.

How long does a solar installation take?

Most domestic installations are completed in one to two days once the scaffold is up, including panels, inverter, any battery and the electrics. Older terraces with tight access or slate roofs can take a little longer, and we say so at the quote stage. We then issue your MCS certificate, and our servicing and maintenance team is there for the life of the system.
